5 Indoor Plants That Need Low Light: How to Grow Them Indoors with Expert Tips

Hello, I am happy to introduce you to five wonderful indoor plants that can thrive well even in low-light rooms. If you are looking to add more greenery inside your home but do not get enough natural light, this list is perfect for you. Now we will talk about these houseplants and how to care for them.

Contents
5 Indoor Plants That Need Low Light: How to Grow Them Indoors with Expert Tips1. Phlebodium Aureum (Golden Polypody)2. Fittonia (nerve plant)3. Syngonium (arrowhead plant)4. Chlorophytum (Spider Plant)5. Zamioculcas zamifolia (ZZ plant)Result: Adding greenery to low-light areas.

1. Phlebodium Aureum (Golden Polypody)

First up, we have Phlebodium aureum , or golden polypody. This plant grows naturally among small shrubs in shady woodland areas. It will grow well in rooms that receive little sunlight; however, it does benefit from some indirect light. The soft, wavy foliage has a bluish-green color that can really brighten up dark spaces.

For successful care of indoor plants , it is desirable that the humidity levels are high; therefore, daily spraying works wonders. Place the plant on a tray with water and pebbles in the room, especially when the room is rather dry. It is difficult to choose a neglected species and survive but it will do much better with proper care. I have one in a dim corner of my apartment, and it is growing wonderfully!

2. Fittonia (nerve plant)

Next on our list is the stunning Fittonia , also known as the Nerve Plant. A truly stunning plant for any plant lover, its main feature includes some gorgeous colors and veins on its leaves that add an extra touch to any room. Although it prefers brighter conditions where those colors can be enhanced, Fittonia can tolerate low-light environments quite well for the plant, making it a great choice for dim areas of a home or apartment.

This plant will turn a dark spot in any area of your home into something more eye-catching, thanks to its contrasting leaves. If you decide to grow a Fittonia , make sure to keep the soil consistently moist as it loves moisture. It’s a great way to add some cheer and greenery to a room that needs a little life.

3. Syngonium (arrowhead plant)

Next on the list is the Syngonium plant , also known as the Arrowhead plant. These beautiful houseplants love bright, indirect light, but the all-green varieties will tolerate low light. Just a word of caution: Pink and white Syngoniums are sensitive, as they contain less chlorophyll and therefore require more light.

Indoor Care: Syngoniums are notoriously picky. I also find that they drop their leaves easily if moved to a dark room. The key is to bring them in the spring when the plant is in its growing season. That way, it will have time to adjust to its new environment, even if it is a bit darker. Once it is established, it will grow back thickly in due course, and trust me, it is worth it!

4. Chlorophytum (Spider Plant)

Let’s take a look at one of the easiest houseplants to care for, Chlorophytum , commonly known as the spider plant. Known for its hardy nature, this plant is perfect for those who are just starting out or looking for a low-maintenance indoor plant . Although the spider plant prefers a brighter area, it will grow well in low light conditions and can therefore be used throughout your home.

These plants grow naturally and usually have small white flowers with long stems, which is an added bonus. If your spider plant is used to a brighter spot—such as outside or even in a bright room—it will take some time to adjust to being moved to a darker spot, but it will eventually thrive. It’s a pretty much foolproof plant and doesn’t require much attention once it’s established.

5. Zamioculcas zamifolia (ZZ plant)

Last but not least, I would like to introduce you to the Zamioculcas zamiifolia or ZZ plant . It is one of the most dim light tolerant plants you can find in nature, and it can survive and grow well even if placed far from windows. If you are afraid that your house is too dark to grow something, the ZZ plant is the solution.

It was amazing to me how this plant could grow so beautifully in places that other plants couldn’t. It doesn’t need to be watered all the time – in fact, it can go weeks without being really cared for. One of the few ways it gets damaged is by overwatering. My mom has one of these plants that has grown so big, she has it in a corner with low light. If you’re looking for a hardy, easy-care indoor plant , this is it!

Result: Adding greenery to low-light areas.

I hope this guide has inspired you to bring some greenery into your low-light rooms. With a little extra care, beautiful, thriving houseplants will find their way into your low-light space. Plants like Phlebodium aureum , Fittonia , Syngonium , Chlorophytum , and Zamioculcas zamiifolia are perfect for growing indoors, especially in those dimly lit corners.

Caring for indoor plants in low light conditions requires understanding your plants’ needs, providing them with more humidity, and watering them carefully. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different types of plants until you see which ones work best for your home. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned gardener, these houseplants will add color, life, and vibrancy to any room.

Once you’ve chosen the right low-light plants, make sure you’re avoiding common care mistakes. Learn how to prevent issues like brown leaf tips in our guide on understanding and preventing brown leaf tips.

Happy farming!
